Getting Ready to Listen
- Breathe! Relax. Native speakers will speak at a much faster pace than what we practice in class.
- Accept that you won't always understand everything - and that's okay!
- Try to understand the gist of the conversation
- If you don't understand one or two words - don't worry! Don't get caught up on one word and get stuck trying to translate it; you will miss out on everything else in the conversation!
- Chances are, they will repeat themselves, or say the meaning in a different way
- Try to listen for the verbs, nouns, and adjectives that you do know - to help understand the overall meaning
- If you are speaking with someone, try to look at their lips/eyes/body language to help you pick up clues.
Breathe! You will do great! You will get more confident and improve each time you practice!
